Winter is finally setting in. I'm still playing but the tournament season is done for 2012. It had been more than 20 years since I had played in tournaments. Bowling Green Open in 1994 and not much has changed.
I played in 7 events this year and finished at the bottom or dead last in my division 6 times. The only exception was the Battlefield Open in Richmond where I finished 12th out of 26 players in intermediate. That was a bid day for me. It was the first time I had ever finished in the prizes in a PDGA sanctioned event. My prize? Three Crystal Z Buzzzes.
My worst tournament had to have been the last two. In Advanced Masters at the Winchester IFO I was had a terrible first round but the second round was going much better and with 2 holes left I was beating my morning round by 5 strokes. Unfortunately for me I had a 6 & 4 to finished the round and finished with the exact same score. I finished last and the kicker was a real nice guy who has been only playing for about a year and in his first tournament finished ahead of me because of the end of the round blow up.
The exact same thing happened again last weekend at the Fall Colors at Newport News DGC. I had an average morning round (I was still in last place) But my afternoon round was going so much better until with 4 holes left I decided to fuck it all up and finish with the same score as my morning round and put a choke hold on that last position.
I have decided that next year I am going to be in the Advanced Grand Masters division and will be semi-retired from tournaments and play in local tournamnets only. I can finish last locally. I don't need to drive 150-200 miles to finish last anymore.
On a better note I finished my latest dye last night. I have been wanting to do this one for a long time...

Bored at work = evental disc dye
A few nights ago I was bored at work and started tinkering around with the Spotsy DGC logo to see if I could update it.
This is what I ended up with...
I think I did okay. Later that night I figured it would make a pretty good disc dye and after about an hour of cutting I ended up with this on my old 166 Discraft Glide....
It turned out a lot better than I thought it would considering it was a beat up disc. There were some bleeds but not too bad. The outer edge is not as dark as it looks in the pic.

Latest Dye...
I had one disc left in my back pack that didn't have any ink on it so I began searching for an idea. Then I remembered a great graphic by Steve "Espo" Powers. It's everything I like about graphics. It's simple, clean and has a great message.
I was able to get clean straight lies by using a steel strait edge on the text. It turned out really well and only bled a little near the edge where the blizzard plastic has texture.

I Just Can't Stop....
I bought a couple of Star Classic ROCs and decided to dye one of them for my backpack. I was considering a Cheech & Chong design (possibly my next disc) but it seemed to typical.
Then I saw this on a disc golf through history thread on DGCR....
I turned out really well. Only a few small bleeds and it is a sweet design for a disc.

Forum member Timber posted it but it was just too good not to do something with it. THis is what I ended up with...

Latest Dye...
I have a pretty dark fucked up sense of humor.
My latest disc dye started out with me reading one of my old copies of Bloom County. Bill the Cat then became my next design. I then decided to push the bounds of good taste by naming it "Bad Pussy".
It only took me a few hours to cut out and I put it on my Champion Super Stingray.

This turned out to be one of my best dyes yet. Only one small bleed which is incredible considering all the intricate cuts I had to make. I finished this one just in time for the Bayville Bash this weekend in Virginia Beach.

It's Getting Addictive...
I have only been dyeing discs a short time. As of today I think I've done about 7 discs including my 2 latest dyes. These will probably be the last two for a while. I'm having a blast doing this but if I'm not careful I'll be dying every bit of plastic I have.
I went with a movie theme on my latest discs. The first one was on my 150 Champion Mamba of Jules Winnfield from "Pulp Fiction"...
What sucked about this one was after I cut out the mask and was applying it to the disc the mask ripped by the text and I had to trash it and start it all over again. It took me about 4 hours to cut out this one and I had to do it all over again.
My 166 Champion Mamba I dyed with FBI Agent Pual Smecker from "Boondock Saints".
This one took me about 5 hours to cut out. Even though there are a few bleed outs where the dye went where it wasn't supposed to I'm very happy with how they turned out.

A New Disc Golf Hobby
I was inspired by some of the guys on DGCR that do some amazing disc dyes.
If you haven't heard of this. You cut out a mask with adhesive vinyl and apply it to the disc. Then you heat up some poly dye and float the disc in the dye. Every where there is an opening in the mask the dye stains the disc's plastic.
Step 1 was to cut out the mask. I did this at work on the old light table we used to edit negatives on. It worked great. Some designs were easy and only took about an hour.
Once I removed the cut outs and worked out all the air bubbles I tried my first dye....
My first attempt was my Eddie design that took about 3 hours to cut out. I dyed my 150 Champion Leopard.
The next one was my 150 Star Sidewinder....
I finished up with my Star Dart putter with a little reminder to hit the chains.
For first tries they turned out all right. There are some amazing multi-colored dyes out there. The only limit is your imagination.
